A slightly theatrical reading by Iris Bahr from her book "Dork Whore", a humorous and touching journey through her earlier life.

Review

Iris Bahr's show "Dai (Enough)" is currently playing to full houses down at the Pleasance Courtyard.

Here we have extracts from her book "Dork Whore", autobiographical tales from her journey through life. We are treated to the often comical encounters in Thailand and in seeking to lose her cherry in the process (or give it willingly away).

The style of delivery is meant as theatre; there are lighting changes and occasionally Bahr leaves her stool and walks around the stage. The lighting didn't really work and Bahr attempted some light banter with the technician as lighting cues missed their targets. The selections from the book were a bit disjointed and I lost my way a few times in what is, essentially, a verbal travellog of an evening.

That said, what made this work so well, of course is the material, and of course Bahr herself, her nineteen-to-the-dozen eloquent delivery, and involvement in her own story and her wish to share it with us. Often hilarious, often touching, always human and sharply observed, I wish this pot-pourri has decided to either be done theatrically, or as a straight book-reading (which it almost was).

Recommended though for an hour of engaging material from a fine performer and writer.
