Review
As the Mother of a Brown Boy is a visual treat combining dance, song and multi media.
As the Mother of a Brown Boy tells the tale of Mischa Niering a 19 year old man of mixed race who was killed during a police chase following an attempted robbery. It is unclear whether this is an investigation into the botched police chase that lead to the tragedy, or an investigation of the larger issue of race. As the Mother of a Brown Boy questions whether we are all a product of our circumstances, and asks what chance does a mixed race kid growing up in a single parent home on a council estate really have.
It’s a huge issue to tackle and As the Mother of a Brown Boy may lack focus but it still delivers a tremendous punch. This compelling piece draws you in as the energetic young cast jump around the stage with ease, climbing, leaping and throwing each other about with a grace that is wonderful to watch.
As the Mother of a Brown Boy is a moving piece of theatre. The tears were streaming freely down my cheeks by the end. A beautiful tribute to a young mans life and tragic death.
An important piece of theatre that young people everywhere should see.
