Review
The alluring and beautiful Camille returns to Edinburgh, this time performing a new show in the impressive Queens Hall venue. Removed from the cosy cabaret comfort of her usual Edinburgh haunt, The Spigeltent, she could have floundered in such a large and comparatively formal setting. However, her talent and onstage magnetism meant that she embraced the space wholeheartedly, retainig her trademark style of moving seductively around the audience, charming the women as much as she did the men.
She presents a bevvy of new songs, with a few old favourites thrown into this satisfying repetoire for good measure. 'The babies I couldn't drown'. Her emotive and characterful singing voice embraces the soulful songs of Jacques Brel and Tom Waits and makes them her own. She tells the stories of the songs impeccably - drawing the audience in and taking them on a journey.
Camille has never been afraid to perform songs laden with the most heart wrenching of emotion, and the title of her new show 'Dark Angel' hints at the depths these songs will plumb. It is music to sob to, there is no doubt about that - and as she sings the old favourite 'Look Mummy', tears pour down her own flawless cheeks, bringing more than a small lump to my throat.
Her excellent band and the opulent set; peppered with fairy lights and parasols makes this an immersive musical and theatrical evening - to be highly reccommended.
