Battersea Arts Centre - What is Next?

THE BIG STORY

Pull up a chair, take a place beside the fire and get comfortable, as BAC begins a season of work devoted to the age old art of storytelling.

Spoken word artist Polarbear stages the world premiere of his new solo show, Return, a narrative of return, loss and memory, borrowing from the language of film making to conjure a bold visual landscape in his audience’s imagination. Polarbear has featured on BBC Radio 1,2,3,4 and 6, and has performed around the world, from Glastonbury to Kuala Lumpur and California.

John Haynes is one half of Ridiculusmus, the company behind critically acclaimed shows including The Importance of Being Earnest and Tough Time, Nice Time. In his one man show, The Poof Downstairs, John shares the story of what happens when Jeremy returns to live with his parents in adulthood.

Little Bulb will be taking over BAC’s bar with performances of Sporadical, their new show that developed in front of delighted audiences at Edinburgh’s Forest Fringe in 2009. Beginning at 9.30, audiences can catch this light hearted, musical history of the Welles-Ferry family following Return or The Poof Downstairs. There will also be bands and DJs playing following the performances.

If That’s All There Is was one of the sell out highlights of Edinburgh Festival 2009 from Inspector Sands, the company behind Total Theatre Award winning Hysteria. Told through the eyes of a jaded therapist and an awkward teenage girl, the play is a case study of longing, envy, disappointment and violent urges, stamped with Inspector Sands’ trademark surreal wit, eccentricity and movement sequences.

Other highlights of the season include Third Angel’s Class of ’76 and The River People’s Lilly Through the Dark, as well as Something Quiet is About to Happen by Deborah Pearson, sharings of true stories in a variety of rooms around BAC in My Story and new Scratch work from Tassos Stevens of Coney and Andy Field.  David Gale continues his extraordinary 6 month theatre experiment Dash Dash Dash with the latest instalment of his original monthly plays.

BAC’s Joint Artistic Director David Micklem said: ‘'As our lives become increasingly complex and fractured, BAC is taking time out to celebrate our love of a great story well told.  With artists as diverse as Polarbear, John Haynes, Little Bulb and Inspector Sands we are exploring new stories, new ways of telling stories and introducing new voices to Lavender Hill for one Big Story this spring.”

The Big Story runs from 2nd March- 10th April at BAC.
